PATIENT NOTIFICATION

Advices for patients after flap operation (gum surgery)

1. No eating/drinking for 2 hours after surgery.
2. Stay away from hot foods and drinks for 24 hours. Do not chew with the teeth on operation zone(s). Tepid and soft foods are appropriate. Sodas, fizzy drinks, alcoholic beverages and spicy foods must be avoided.
3. Do not smoke for 4-5 days after surgery. It’ll increase intraoral temperature, irritate the tissues and endanger the healing process.
4. Do not lift up your lips and cheeks to see the sutures or operation zone.
5. There might be minimal bleeding as leakage on the first 4-5 hours and can colour your saliva. You should inform your doctor if bleeding continues.
6. There might be swelling. You should apply cold compress from outside to the operation zone for 30 minutes and rest for 30 minutes. After first day you should apply warm compress.
7. If you fell weakness in the first day after surgery, do not worry. You can continue your daily activities but do not push yourself too much.
8. You should take your medicine according to your doctor’s prescription for optimal healing. You can take painkillers (not aspirin -salicylic acid- or anything that cause increase of bleeding) if you feel tingle or pain. You should use antibiotics exactly as they are prescribed by your doctor.
9. While you can brush the areas outside of surgical zone as usual, you should avoid sutures and gums in surgical areas. Do not brush if periodontal dressing (pink, protective paste) is applied. Use the recommended mouthwash 2-times a day after brushing your teeth. Do not eat or drink for 1 hour after using mouthwash.
10. Get your sutures removed after the recommended period by your doctor (usually 7 to 10 days after surgery).
11. Avoid fizzy drinks, tea, coffee, chocolate etc. to prevent hot or cold sensitivity.

Advices for patients after gingivectomy (elimination of excess gingiva)

1. No eating/drinking for 2 hours after surgery.
2. Stay away from hot foods and drinks for 24 hours. Do not chew with the teeth on operation zone(s). Tepid and soft foods are appropriate. Sodas, fizzy drinks, alcoholic beverages and spicy foods must be avoided.

It protects the operation zone from irritation, helps to healing process, relieves pain and let you continue to your daily routine. It may cause discomfort for the first couple hours, do not touch and/or move it with your tongue or fingers. It’s ok if the dressing cracks and breaks up as little pieces. If the broken pieces are much bigger or the dressing comes off completely, please come back to the hospital for replacement.

11. You should bring the pathology report with you to your next appointment if your doctor requested pathological examination to the excised tissue.

Advices for patients after mucogingival surgery (plastic and esthetic gum surgery)

1. No eating/drinking for 2 hours after surgery.
2. Stay away from hot foods and drinks for 24 hours. Do not chew with the teeth on operation zone(s). Tepid and soft foods are appropriate. Sodas, fizzy drinks, alcoholic beverages and spicy foods must be avoided.
3. Do not smoke for 3-4 weeks after surgery. It’ll increase intraoral temperature, irritate the tissues and endanger the healing process.
4. Periodontal dressing may be applied to the operation zone and/or the donor site (usually palate). The purpose of using periodontal dressing (pink, protective paste) is to make you feel comfortable. It protects the operation zone from irritation, helps to healing process, relieves pain and let you continue to your daily routine. It may cause discomfort for the first couple hours, do not touch and/or move it with your tongue or fingers. It’s ok if the dressing cracks and breaks up as little pieces. If an essix retainer is applied to the donor site instead of periodontal dressing, you should use it without taking it out for 7-10 days.
